Following your child's behavior and work habits on Class Dojo

12/8/2015

Many of you (13 out of 24 as of writing this to be exact!) have been following your child's work habits and behavior record on Class Dojo. This is the first year I have used it daily and so far, I like it. It is a great way for me to personally keep records on things like:
  • homework completion
  • undesirable behaviors (non-STAR behavior)...."card flips"
  • good behavior (I haven't used it quite as much for this but I'm working on it!)

In the past I have kept a record of this and sent it home in the Weekly Folder, either on a quarterly sheet or more recently, the "weekly report" slip. I will no longer be doing the weekly report sheet or slip in the folders. Parents (and myself)  will be able to access all of this information through Class Dojo. If you haven't signed up already and I have an email address for you- I will be sending an invite soon. I would encourage you to sign up as it is going to be the best way to keep track of your child's work habits and behavior. Once signed up, you can check on it as little or as often as you'd like...it really is up to you. Another nice feature of Class Dojo that I have used with some parents, and hope to utilize more is the messaging feature. Think of it as another way to communicate with me that in many ways, is easier and more direct than email.  I promise that this isn't difficult and won't take a lot of your time- in fact it should save you time and keep you MORE in the "loop" with your child's school experience. Here is the bottom line:
  • sign up to follow our class/your student on Class Dojo if you haven't yet
  • know that the weekly report slips will NOT be coming anymore in the Weekly Folders
  • check Class Dojo as often as you'd like to see how your child is doing
  • Let me know if you can't access the internet and I will send you the weekly print outs from Class Dojo. I am just encouraging people to follow it electronically to save paper but I am glad to send print outs if that's what works best for you.
Thanks!

Hello everyone,
A couple of things:
1) I sent out a conference sign up, please take a look and sign up if we haven't met already this year. If nothing on the list works for you, just contact me with a few times/dates and we'll make something work!
2) I MUST HAVE more chaperones for the field trip next week. Some trips I can get by with less than the desired amount, this is NOT one of those trips. I really need 6 adults. At last check I had 2. PLEASE consider signing up whether you have been on a field trip before or not. It's a fun day and we can't go with out more help. Thanks ahead of time for your consideration.

Multi digit multiplication done....differently!

We are currently studying multi digit multiplication and some of the homework & class work your child will be bringing home might look pretty strange. While I will be showing them the "old school " method (that is how MOST of us adults do it), I will be teaching them a few other methods as well. This serves the purpose of giving them a deeper conceptual understanding of multiplication, as well as gives them a few more "tools" in the tool box. One of the methods is known as the lattice method and the other is called area model or all partials. There is an example above. In time, your child will be able solve problems using various strategies, as well as being able to explain how they are alike/different and how they work.

"Washington Elementary is very please to host its first "Composer in Residence."  Local composer, Larry Schultz is working with our Washington family to create a publishable piece of music, orchestrated for beginning strings and beginning band, to serve as our new graduation song!  Mr. Schultz will be working with our students and staff in the coming weeks, but we would also like to hear from you.  What makes Washington Elementary as special place for you and your family?  Please send comments and stories to Mr. Reece via email ([email protected]) with the subject heading 'Music Project'. Hello Everyone,
I hope everyone had a nice Halloween weekend. Report cards went home today. Please send back the signed envelope (you should keep the report card) with your child as soon as possible- they get a 20 dollar bonus buck reward if they bring it back tomorrow! Now that report cards have gone out, I will get a conference sign up out in the next few days. If no dates/times on the list work for you OR you would prefer a phone conference at a different time....just let me know and we can make that  happen. Thanks!

Trying something different........

Hello Everyone,
There have been some issues with students losing/not returning the signature sheet in the weekly folders. We have also had some students who aren't taking home the graded/checked work from the weekly folders. In order to fix this and to continue communication with parents and guardians, I am trying something new. I am going to do away with the signature sheet and replace it with a WEEKLY REPORT. This report will reflect the work habits and behavior for the preceding week.  There will be spots on there to report the quality of the work they are doing, missing homework and # of card flips. In addition, there will be a spot for your child to set a weekly goal. I will be stapling this sheet to any classwork/homework that is being returned. As usual, you will find other important papers in the Weekly folder.   Please review this sheet, SIGN IT, and send it BACK IN with your child. Hopefully this will make things easier and things that are supposed to get home will get there. Thanks for being flexible--let's try this for a while and if it doesn't work...we can always go back to the old weekly folder sheets. Thanks.

Upcoming Social Studies project...help needed!

Hi folks- I could use a few volunteers to do something for me by next Friday (10/16). I have created a SIGN UP GENIUS list, if you are interested in helping...check it out.  l need  people to make batches of salt dough ( one batch of green, one of red, one of blue...a batch would be 25 tennis ball-ish sized pieces individually bagged), I also could use a volunteer to get us 25 pizza boxes (they can just be flat, like they arrive at the restaurant). We are using all this stuff for salt dough relief maps which I was hoping to do on that Friday morning (it's an early release day). Thanks!
